Under the heading technical papers are texts for students, practitioners and collectors about the material technology of visual art. In these texts art is considered an object constructed using certain materials and techniques resulting in the work of art having certain chemical and physical properties. These properties determine what we can see of it as emitted or reflected light. Such properties, furthermore, also direct how the work should be displayed, stored and preserved.
Material technology and the manner of its application directly affects the integrity of the work of art and its durability in time. If art is to last the right materials need to be applied in the right manner. If durability is not an issue the permanency of the materials used in making the work of art also is not an issue – though the manner of their application might.
Under this heading a few texts that hopefully are of help to the artist, student and collector in understanding and appreciating material technology of art.
