Even if Zambia had a Museum of Art we would build a
VIRTUAL MUSEUM OF ART IN ZAMBIA.
Why?
There are things a virtual museum can do and which a physical museum cannot do.
And, reversely, there are things a physical art museum can do and a virtual museum cannot do.
In the virtual art museum you don't see original works, you see reproductions. Perception of such a reproduction at best approximates the experience triggered of by direct sensory perception of the work of art. This is the main drawback of the virtual art reality. The virtual museum does not and cannot replace the physical museum when it comes to immediate perceptual experience of the work of art.
Positively the virtual art museum has great, unique qualities:
1. Immense flexibility of information management in all of its aspects: gathering, generating, updating, storage, presentation, dissemination, publication, (global) accessibility and cost effectiveness.
2. The possibility of interactive site management including communication with visitors who also may become contributors in content construction.
Fine. Now the question is: What are we going to do with it? Please note the WE in the question. That WE opens up the possibility that you, the passive visitor changes role to become an active participant.
Doing what? Getting involved in internet publication about the Zambian Art World by means of this site.
How? Presently by accessing the Art in Zambia facebook page: go to Art in Zambia and make an entry. Not yet a member of Zambia's largest open social art net work? Get-in now!
So what are themes and subjects that in any case should feature on the site? Below a tentative itinerary of topics you might be able to contribute to - suggestions are welcome.
In principle there are many more options and possibilities such as a Gallery serving marketing, customer facilitation and sales, or educational productions targeting specific populations.
This website is associated to the facebook private group Art in Zambia and the Google Art in Zambia Blog.
